Ewha Dormitory + To bring or not to bring.

So I have started my stay in Ewha's Graduate Student Dormitory since last week (5th September 2016). I would say that my stay so far has been rather pleasant, largely due to my roommate. It is really important to have a good roommate.

So I was contemplating a lot on what to bring or not to bring for my trip. Honestly, I would like to bring my WHOLE house along if I could, but there's always luggage limit. :(

To bring or not to bring
Leave your blanket and bedsheets at home. Bedsheets are provided with a deposit of 3,000won (non-refundable). Mirrors are available in the bathroom and inside your wardrobe, but you may wanna bring a small one for your makeup purposes.

These are a list of things that you may choose to buy in Korea or bring it from your country to save some $$$ (these items are not provided in the room):
 - Hangers (not too many as you've only a small wardrobe of around 40cm)
 - Utensils (Chopsticks & spoon) + cup
 - Detergent / softener
 - Soap / Shampoo / Conditioner / Toothbrush / Toothpaste (Ideal to bring some and buy only when you have settled down, unless you want to do some major groceries shopping straight after you reached)
 - Hair dryer (you can rent from the office, but erm.. you know.. more convenient)
 - Extension plug (not needed if 4 sockets are enough for you)
 - Travel adapter(s) (DEFINITELY!! But of course you can buy)
 - Toilet papers (for rooms that have personal toilet)
 - Tissues
 - Water container (to save you the hassle of walking to and from the pantry area every time you wanna drink water)
 - Deodorant (DEFINITELY!! It is super hard to find one in Korea, but you most probably won't need it if you're going in Winter season)

Then again, all these things can be bought from the nearest Daiso located near the Subway station. There's another Daiso located at Sinchon too. You can find a Supermarket at Sinchon too. Tax refund is available in that supermarket (yeah to saving money!!)

Room and Facilities

Now for my room...

Shoe cabinet just in front of your door. There's a full mirror attached to the cabinet.
Toilet and a mini fridge. There's A LOT of cabinet available for your to store your things.
A table lamp for your studying / make up purposes
Balcony, where you can do some drying of your clothes.
Night view from my room
Sunset view
One thing to note, air-con will switch off automatically every day at around 0940H and 2310H. So be prepared to wake up in the middle of the night to switch on the air-con.

For those who do not have a en-suite toilet, you gotta use the shared toilet available. I supposed there is a female toilet on every floor.

Below are some information which you may find it useful:

  • Building A / B = Graduate Student Dormitory (GSD)
  • Building C = Ewha-Samsung International House
  • Building D = International House II
  • Building E = International House Annex

Direction to Ewha Dormitory
Highly recommended to either take a cab (40,000 - 80,000 won for an hour, according to Ewha website) or if you're on a budget, take Bus 6011 and stop outside of Ewha.

DO NOT take Bus 6002 unless you don't mind walking through the Ewha street (uphill slope!) with your luggage(s).

Dormitory Office
Located at B2 of GSD, you may check-in at any time during the operational hours (0900H - 2300H). You'll be given a handbook that contains all the rules and regulations of the dormitory when you checked-in. You may even loan a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer from the office using your student card.
information for sending parcel to the dormitory
The Dormitory Office is just next to the Security Office, which leads to the main entrance. This is the only entrance that people without the access card may enter from.

WIFI
WIFI will not be available for ELC students until your first day of lesson, in which your student ID and password will be given to you by your 선생님. That's right! No internet connection from the day you reached to the first day of your school. That is, if you're lucky cause my roommate and I (plus some other ELC students) were unable to access our wifi after getting our student ID. So to be safe, get a wifi egg or unlimited data sim card in Incheon Airport, well, at least for a month. It's totally worth it!
This notice is available in the lift. However, from what I know, it is only applicable for Ewha students, not ELC students.

Kitchenette
Pantry area is available on every floor of the dormitory. You can find 2 microwave ovens, a toaster, water dispenser (both hot and cold) for your drinking purpose or cooking of instant noodles. Other than that, you may dispose your trash in the pantry area but you gotta separate your trash (Korea's culture). No cooking is allowed in the kitchenette. If you wanna cook, there is a kitchen available at B1 of Building C, where electronic stoves are available.

Other facilities
Gym a.k.a. Fitness room
B2 of GSD
Laundry / Ironing Room
B2 of GSD and B1 of Building C, D and E.
For those who are washing-machine-idiot like me, fear not! There are step-by-step instructions all over the wall for both washer and dryer.
Yes, you gotta pay every time you use the washer or dryer. It's 500 won per usage. There's 2 ways of payment:
  1. Store up all your 500 won coins for your laundry.
  2. Buy the pre-paid card for a deposit of 1,000 won (refundable).

For the pre-paid card, refund is only available via a Korean bank account.
Computer room
B2 of GSD, 1st floor of Building C and B1 of Building D.
Step by Step instruction on how to use the printing facilities
Practically nobody uses this room cause, in this age, having a laptop is common. But for students who need to access Korea's government website (e.g. TOPIK / ALIEN card registration), then you may access it using these computers. As what I have heard from my friends, you won't be able to access those websites even if you're using IE on your own laptop!

Study room
B2 of GSD and B1 of Building C.
Lounge
B2 of GSD
Prayer room
2 rooms are available for praying - Oratory or Multi-Cultural Mediation Room. Both rooms are at B1 of Building C. Bibles are available in the Oratory room. Alternatively, just do it in your room, if your roommate does not mind. No photos available. duh!

Others
Curfew
Don't be alarmed. There's no curfew in Graduate Student Dormitory, International Houses nor Annex Building. However, there is curfew for dormitory located on the mountain top of Ewha, a.k.a. Hanwoori House. Luckily, most Language program students will not be posted there; unless you're the unlucky few whereby they ran out of rooms or you are under 18 years old.
However, do take note, especially for guys, that the main gate of Ewha closes at 2200H every night. I haven't been stopped by the guards before, but there's a boyish-looking girl in my roommate's class, whom got stopped by the guard. She had to show her dormitory pass to prove that she's staying in the dormitory. I have seen a guy visitor, who was going to ECC to study, got refrained from entry by the guards. Alternatively, go back to your dormitory from the side gate from the ELC building.

Notification
GSD has a sure-to-see way of notifying the students of any information (as seen in the photo below). Important information like orientation, moving-out date, etc., are posted on your door like this. I have seen notes on "keeping quiet after a specific timing" or "no guests allowed in the dormitory area" kind of notifications posted on the doors too.

Mail
Shelves are located just outside the kitchenette at every floor, whereby all the letters address to you will be placed. If it's a parcel or anything bigger than a letter, the mail will be sent to the dormitory office located at B2. A call will be made to your room once the dormitory office has received the parcel. Remember to bring your student card down for verification purposes.
